This policy covers freejapaneselessons.com and the members app at app.freejapaneselessons.com. Free Japanese Lessons (“we”) is the controller of the personal information described here.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not collect precise location, contacts, calendars, or social-network profiles.
Information we collect
You give us
- Account: first name, last name, email address, and a password when you register. We never store your password in readable form.
- Membership purchase: if you buy lifetime access, Stripe collects your payment details. We receive confirmation of the charge, amount, currency, and a Stripe customer ID — not your full card number.
- Email list: name and email if you subscribe for lesson updates.
- Messages: whatever you send to lessons@freejapaneselessons.com.
Collected automatically
- Pages and features you use, device and browser type, approximate location from IP address, and referral URL.
- Server logs on our host (IP address, user agent, timestamps).
- Cookies and similar identifiers, as described below.
How we use it
To run the site and app, create and keep you signed in to your account, send confirmation and password-reset emails, process membership payments and keep a record of access, send lesson updates you asked for, measure how the site is used, prevent abuse, and answer questions you send us.
Where a legal basis is required, we rely on: performing our contract with you (account, lessons, payment); your consent (email list and non-essential cookies); legitimate interests (security, basic analytics, improving the service); and legal obligations (tax and accounting records).
Cookies
- Session cookies on the app keep you signed in (about 30 days). These are required to use an account.
- Google Analytics cookies on the website measure visits and traffic.
- Drip cookies on the website power email-list forms and related tracking.
Your browser can block or delete cookies. Blocking session cookies will sign you out of the app. We also load Google Fonts, which can see your IP address when a page loads.
Who we share it with
We share information with the companies that help us operate — only as needed for that work:
- Supabase — accounts and membership records
- Stripe — payments
- Mailgun — account emails
- Google Analytics — website usage
- Drip — email list and on-site signup forms
- Netlify — hosting
These companies may process data in the United States or other countries. We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or users, or to a successor if the service is sold.
Affiliate links
We earn a commission if you buy through some links (including Amazon Associates, Rocket Japanese, and other language products). Those companies collect information under their own policies once you leave our site. See our affiliate disclaimer.
We do not currently run third-party display ads.
How long we keep it
Account data lasts until you ask us to delete the account. Payment and membership records are kept as long as needed for access, refunds, tax, and accounting. Email-list contacts stay until you unsubscribe. Server logs and analytics follow each provider’s retention settings.
Your rights
Email lessons@freejapaneselessons.com to access, correct, export, or delete your information, or to object or restrict certain processing. Unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in those messages. You can also complain to your local data-protection authority.
Children
The site and app are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you think we have, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use HTTPS, restrict who can access account data, and keep session cookies inaccessible to page scripts. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Changes
If we change this policy in a material way, we will update the date above and post a notice on the site. If the change affects registered members, we will also email the address on the account.
